Manchu & Han Identities

Beginning in 1644, and for the next three centuries, an ethnic minority referred to as the Manchu ruled over the Han Chinese population. As a means to differentiate ruler and ruled, the Manchus developed their own style of dress. More masculine than the feminine Han style, Manchus hoped the style would remain distinct but the two bled together over time.
